Well, it was only a matter of time before the mechanical bug bit me. In the lead group of three on lap 3 and my rear tire sidewall blew out. two tubes, and a couple of cartridges later (but NO boot) my first DNF in years.
The lesson learned is about the boot. Unknown to me until after the 10 mile walk back to the venue...a "boot" is a small piece of rubber from an old tire - or a manufactured boot by Park - that fits inside the tire.
The good news - fitness is in a great place - bad news is racing is never as straight forward as it seems.
Great event - the folks at Red Rock continue to do good work. While the course has it detractor's - my philosophy is pretty simple on racing - you are racing the fast guy next to you not the course. Stop whining about the course - just race.
Already marked my calendar for a retribution race in 2012 - I will be back and I will be better prepared.
Next up - The Squash Blossom Classic Screamer in Gallup, NM on September 24.
